A compact and solid dog, the Shih Tzu’s long, flowing double coat is its most

this portable pooch has a distinctively arrogant carriage with his head well up

A Look Back
Cherished by Chinese royals as prized house pets for over a thousand years, it is
believed to have descended from crossing the Lhasa Apso or Tibetan mountain
dog and Pekingese. The Shih Tzu was the house pet for most of the Ming
Dynasty and was discovered by soldiers in England during World War II.

As the sole purpose of the Shih Tzu is companion and house pet, he should be

A Look Back
Named for the English city from which they originally hail, Yorkshire
Terriers were used in the nineteenth century to catch rats in clothing

working class, especially the weavers; in fact, facetious comments were
often made about how the dogs' fine, silky coats were the ultimate
product of the looms. Eventually, the breed left the workforce and
became a companion animal to families of European high society.

Yorkies are easily adaptable to all surroundings, travel well and make
suitable pets for many homes. Due to their small size, they require limited
exercise, but need daily interaction with their people. Their long coat

A cheerful, happy dog, the Bichon Frise is small and sturdy with a dark-
eyed inquisitive expression and a plumed tail it carries merrily over the
back. The breed is often compared to a cotton ball due to its curled double
coat, which consists of a textured outer coat and a silky undercoat. The
coat must be white, but may have shadings of buff, cream or apricot
around the ears or on the body. The Ideal size between 9 ½ and 11 ½
inches tall at the shoulder.

A Look Back
The Bichon Frise appeared in the 13th century as a descendent from the
Water Spaniel. Traded by Spanish sailors and transported from continent to
continent, the breed eventually became a favorite of those in the 16th
century French royal courts. The breed was also favored by the painters of
the Spanish school, who often included them in their works. Although the
breed’s colorful past includes use as a circus dog, today the Bichon is
enjoyed primarily as a companion animal.

Right Breed for You?
The Bichon is a naturally gentle, kind, lovable and playful dog. They love
activity and require regular exercise. Their hair grows continually and does
not shed, so grooming is a must to prevent mats. Bichons also tend to be a
good breed for allergy sufferers.
